The No. 3 ranked USAO Drovers (13-1, 3-0 SAC) swept a doubleheader over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels (14-8, 0-3 SAC) with a 10-0 and 4-3 win on Friday.
Game 1: Merrill Dominates As Drovers Secure Series Win
The Drovers took the first game of the doubleheader with a 10-0 win over Mid-America.
The Drovers sent the hard throwing righty Matt Merrill to the mound, who controlled the game from start to finish, throwing a complete game, 7 inning shutout. Merrill would allow just 2 hits and would finish his day with 11 strikeouts. With the win, Merrill moves to 4-0 on the season with a 0.75 era for USAO, which ranks him number 1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Offensively USAO would put together a 10 hit game, led by Brock Henderson who went 2-3 with 2 singles and 2 RBI’s on the day. Luis Pelayo went 2-3 with a single and a double. Joey Pena went 2-3 with a single and a double. Isaac Raab went 1-4 with a double and 1 RBI. Ian Laureano went 1-3 with a double. Colton Bensch went 1-2 with a single. Sterling Valera went 1-3, as he would connect on his first home run of the season. Valera also finished his day with 2 RBI’s for USAO.
Game 2: USAO Completes Sweep Of MACU With 4-3 Win
The Drovers took the second game of the doubleheader and with a 4-3 win over the Evangels and with the win the Drovers picked up its first conference series win of the season.
In the Series finale USAO started lefty Colton Williams, who would again get the job done for the Drovers. Williams would toss 5.2 innings, allowing just 1 unearned run on the night and 9 strikeouts for USAO. With the win Williams improves to 4-0 on the season. In relief the Drovers called on Ricardo Velez, who would throw 1.1 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. Velez finished his night with 3 strikeouts, 1 walk and would collect his 2nd save on the season.
USAO’s offense slowed in the second game as they would only collect 5 hits, led by Cristian Laboy and Luis Pelayo. Laboy went 2-3 with 2 singles and 2 RBI’s. Pelayo went 2-3 with 2 singles. Brock Henderson went 1-1 with a single and 2 RBI’s.
The No. 3 ranked USAO Drovers will be in a top 15 matchup, Tuesday, March 3 when they Travel to Arlington, Texas to take on No. 12 ranked LSU-Shreveport.

The Drovers sent Jean Muntaner to the mound where he would throw 8 innings, allowing 4 earned runs and finish his day with an impressive 14 strikeouts. With the win Muntaner improves to 2-1 on the season for USAO. In relief the Drovers called on Ricardo Velez, who threw 1 inning finishing with 3 strikeouts on the day.
USAO’s offense would put together 9 hits in the series opener as they would be led by Luis Pelayo and Ian Laureano. Pelayo went 2-5 with a single and a double. Laureano went 2-5 with a single and a double. Gus Wilson went 1-4 with a double. Cristian Laboy went 1-3 with a single and 1 RBI. Joey Pena was 1-2 with a single . Colton Bensch went 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Brock Henderson went 1-5 with a single.
The Drovers and Evangels will play a doubleheader Friday to close out the series. First-pitch for game one is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Bill Smith Ballpark in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
The USAO Drovers (14-14, 8-10 SAC) topped the Oklahoma City Stars (14-14, 6-12 SAC) 76-70.
USAO leaned on a strong second half to cap off the season series sweep of the Stars. The Drovers headed to half facing a two-point deficit 32-30. USAO battled back in the second half by shooting 46% from the floor. The Drovers rebounding would be a big factor in this contest as they would outrebounded Oklahoma City 48-43.
Four Drovers found themselves in double-digits scoring, Stephon Hall, Dylan Causwell, Colen Gaynor and Gerard Makuntae. Hall finished the night with 19 points and 4 three-pointers for USAO. Causwell was dominant for the Drovers as he registered his 10th double-double on the season, putting up 14 points with 10 rebounds. Gaynor picked up where he left off against Southwestern Christian as he would put together 17 points and 8 rebounds for the Drovers. Makuntae would finish with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Makuntae has now hit double-digits in three straight games for USAO.
Sophomore Gerard Makuntae said “yesterday’s game was big b/c we have trouble playing team ball consistently. so to win this game after the huge team win Thursday shows that we’re at our best when we don’t care who’s scoring as long as we’re playing as a team we put ourselves in a position to win. “
The Stars were led by Rashaun Coleman and Eddie Smith. Coleman put together a solid performance as he would put up 21 points and grab 7 rebounds for Oklahoma City. Smith would score 13 points with 2 rebounds.
USAO will host Langston University on Thursday, February 27th. Tip-off is set for 7:45 PM CT in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Thursday night will also be Senior night for the Drovers as they will honor Senior Dylan Causwell.
