The Tigers started selling today by trading J.D. Martinez for Diamondbacks Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara and Jose King. This is a decent trade for the Tigers since Martinez’s contract is up at the end of the season. The Tigers didn’t get any top 100 prospects out of this deal but they did get 3 decent infielders for the future. Let’s talk about the 3 players the Tigers acquired:
Lugo is a 22-year-old shortstop and is the 4th best prospect in the Diamondback organization. Lugo is a decent hitter, but doesn’t have great power numbers. Lugo is currently hitting .282 with 7 home runs. Lugo is currently in Double-A and we could see him in the show in the near future.
Alcantara is a 21-year-old shortstop but can also play second base and third base. Alcantara is currently is class A advanced. He is a good all-around athlete with decent speed. Alcantara is currently hitting .279 with 3 home runs. Alcantara could be a decent player for the Tigers in the future.
King is a 18-year-old shortstop but is very versatile. He can also play second and third base. King is currently in the Rookie league where he hit .261, had 12 hits in 46 at bats. In 2016 King hits .350 in 240 at bats. King is a good pick up for the Tigers but he has very little power He did have 21 stolen bases in 2016.
What J.D. Martinez had to say about Detroit “I’m going to miss the fans. I feel like the fans really took me in inside Detroit. For some reason, I don’t why, they always loved me. For that, I thank them,” he said. “They never put me down. They never booed me. They always picked me up. If I would strike out three times in a game, I’d be in the outfield and you could hear them, ‘Hey, you’re all right J.D.! Get ’em in the fourth at-bat.’ It means a lot. I thank them. That’s probably going to be one of the hardest parts to leave.”
